The Corylus Charity Kart Campaign 2010
Following a successful season of racing together in 2009, the Hazell family duo, Rob and Johnny, will be back for more this year with an additional plan in that their racing efforts will also benefit one or more charities – as yet unconfirmed.
Although they may not necessarily raise large sums of money, both drivers feel that they can establish a very important principle from this novel approach to competing in a leisure activity with an ulterior purpose.
Certainly there is no doubting Johnny’s competitiveness as he won each of his first five races when he entered the sport early last year and followed that up with a fastest race lap in his first ever more prestigious “Club 100” event in November. On the other hand Rob, who at 57 returned to kart racing last year after a gap of 30 years, admits to being a little slower, but nevertheless managed a creditable sixth place in his first ever “Club 100” event just three weeks after Johnny’s debut at that level.
With both racers heavily committed in other directions, (Johnny with his undergraduate business studies in Business Management and as a highly successful guitar tutor,
and Rob in numerous activities including as a school governor), their racing programme will be relatively limited and spread over two championships. All being well though, they will hope to compete in up to 16 race events each, including joining together in an Endurance race at Rye House in March.
It is from these races that our charity fund racing campaign will operate in the following manner. Each of the race meetings awards points based on final finishing positions with every higher place achieved worth at least one more point in each of the Championships. In turn, we will ask sponsors to commit just a small amount for every point we earn in these races. In this way our competitive instincts will be served in the knowledge that for every kart we beat, a little more money can be raised for our charities. To avoid anyone over-committing themselves should we prove too successful(!), a full breakdown of potential points scoring totals will be given (see Current Points Progress) to every potential sponsor with the additional proviso that we will happily accept any partial season sponsorship, or even on a race-by-race basis.

Currently Johnny has been pledged 17 pence per point for the season and Rob has been pledged 19 pence per point - also for the season.
